Machzor Shivchei Yeshurun presents the piyutim (liturgical poems) recited on special Shabbosos in many Western Ashkenazic (German and Dutch)* communities.

Designed as a true Machzor, the sefer integrates the piyutim directly into the appropriate sections of the tefillah, eliminating the need to alternate between a siddur and a separate sefer piyutim. The prayers for each Shabbos are clearly defined and presented as a continuous service, allowing the worshipper to pray with continuity.

Each piyut is presented in its full poetic structure and accompanied by brief explanatory notes that highlight its themes. These insights are meant to deepen the worshipper’s appreciation of the beauty and depth of the piyutim, many of which have gradually fallen out of common use as their meaning became less accessible.

The Machzor contains the full yearly cycle of piyutim according to the Western Ashkenazic rite. While it was developed with particular attention to the customs of K’hal Adath Jeshurun of Washington Heights, care was taken to maintain compatibility with virtually all Western Ashkenazic congregations.

Above all, Machzor Shivchei Yeshurun seeks to make a rich liturgical tradition accessible and welcoming, so that both longtime congregants and first-time visitors can experience the piyutim not as obstacles to the service, but as an integral and meaningful part of their Avodah.
